In today’s update notes, Iron Gate say “it’s midsummer here in Sweden, so we celebrate by temporarily making the Maypole buildable”. Maypoles already existed in Valheim, which was actually news to me. They’re relatively rare, appparently, and can sometimes appear in abandoned villages in the Meadows biome. I’d never stumbled across one. Well, now you can build one for yourself for the low cost of ten wood, four dandelions, and four thisle....

“We never could have imagined that Valheim would get as big as it did, and it’s all thanks to you players,” Valheim devs Iron Gate said in yesterday’s blogblast. It really has grown big. Sure, player numbers are down from the Valheim craze a year ago during the winter ‘rona lockdowns, but it’s settled comfortably with a very respectable average of about 30,000 concurrent players—around the middle of Steam’s most-played games....

Neon’s whole schtick is speed. Inspired by lightning, her Ultimate ability lets her shoot electricity from her fingertips. She can raise walls of static that block your vision and damage anyone who passes through them, a bit like a zappy fast lane. As for grenades, she’s got an energy bolt that bounces off surfaces and leaves a concussive splash on the ground. But it’s her ability to sprint and slide that separates her from the rest....

Riot Games say one of the high points of the update is that new mode Spike Rush gets several new ultimate ability orbs to play with. The flashiest among them seems to be the one shot one kill Golden Gun which also increases a player’s speed while in use. There’s also a new health orb granting health regeneration to your entire team and a deception orb that inflicts “paranoia” on the enemy team for three seconds....

For starters, the headset itself is just a lot more pleasant to use and wear for longer periods of time. That’s partly down to the thick fabric padding around the face and headband, but the Index also offers the greatest amount of adjustment out of all the big PC-based VR headsets you can buy at the moment. There’s an interpupillary distance slider underneath the main display (which you don’t get on the Rift S), a big, easy to reach dial on the side of the headset that lets you move the display closer or further away from your face (which is on the Rift S but not on the Vive Cosmos), and a tight and tactile rear dial that adjusts the circumference of the headband....

Ubi’s launcher had received an update of its own, sadly one that interfered with the ability of Proton – the layer of software that helps made-for-Windows games run on the Linux-based SteamOS – to keep it compatible with the Deck. Indeed, just like the 2K Launcher last year, with the added irony that the affected games (which include The Division 2, Watch Dogs Legion and Ghost Recon Breakpoint) only arrived on Steam in the past few weeks....

As an aside, commiserations to the commenters under the video, the majority of whom seemed to have subscribed to Valve’s YouTube channel several years ago to keep up with Team Fortress 2 updates. Keep the faith, true believers. People who have got their hands on the Steam Deck seem impressed so far, noting its size and weight but saying it felt comfortable and easy to use. We haven’t been able to try it ourselves due to Covid flight restrictions, but Katharine has been picking the brains of its designers....

According to GamesIndustry.biz, this means that the studio will no longer be heading up games as lead developer. Vicarious Visions studio head Jen Oneal has been promoted to Blizzard executive vice president of development while her former role is being taken over by the studio’s chief operating officer Simon Ebejer. Activision Blizzard say that “After collaborating with Vicarious Visions for some time and developing a great relationship, Blizzard realized there was an opportunity for [Vicarious Visions] to provide long-term support”....

I’m immediately drawn to the gorgeous cards you can see in the trailer below. There’s some really lovely artwork here, I wonder if they’ll end up making physical versions. Voice Of Cards is set in an ancient fantasy world, and sets you on a quest to take out a dragon that’s been threatening the land. Proper traditional RPG stuff. Square Enix say it’s designed like a tabletop RPG adventure, with you travelling across a board where all the characters, battles, equipment and more are depicted by cards....

Well, if the answer is “some more”, then there were a handful of extra details in a developer livestream this evening. The stream was called the “Warframe & Soulframe transition stream” on Twitch, and that’s an accurate summary. The developers at Digital Extremes mostly talked about who from the Warframe team would be moving onto Soulframe, how they would continue to be involved in future Warframe updates, and who is going to be in charge of Warframe moving forward....

My appreciation for cyberpunk is broad.
