I’ve always had a bit of an on-off relationship with the Monster Hunter series. I started playing them when they arrived on the Nintendo 3DS - I dabbled very briefly in Tri for the Wii, but mostly got into the series around 4 Ultimate. The First Descendant pops you into the armoured shoes of a warrior battling alien invaders on the fictional continent of Ingris. It’s a four-player co-op game, and there’ll be ten characters to try out in the upcoming beta. Each character has different skills such as warping space or electrical attacks. Most importantly, there’s a grappling hook that looks a bit like Monster Hunter Rise’s Wirebug, and this can lop parts off bosses if applied correctly....

Canadian devs Lunarch Studios say they’re setting out to make a “mysterious realm of logic and wisdom”. Project S, which I really hope finds a more distinctive title before release day, is set on a load of scenic floating islands full of various puzzles, which you can explore in first-person or third-person, and in solo or multiplayer. Also floating about are the puzzles themselves, little rotating cubes that open out into black-and-white grids, some with letter and number patterns to solve....

They’re really leaning into it. Between your grubby start and palace crafting, you’ll crawl around the world at night, hunting for blood and turning humans over to your own side. I assume they’ll be NPCs, as will the other creatures of the night you get to fight. During the day, you’ll need to find cover, or you’ll burn. Intriguingly, you can play alone or with your own clan of other vamps....

They’re as thick as slugs: The original Outcast was released in 1999 and was remarkable for its non-linear open world, as well as its strange alien world. It got a faithful remake, Outcast: Second Contact, back in 2017, but it was perhaps too faithful to be welcoming to newcomers. Straight sequel Outcast: A New Beginning looks to be making more concessions towards modernity, at least in terms of the slickness of its combat....
