There’s a launch trailer for the Shirley mod, but it’s mostly a lot of action shots of Shirley in combat without her familiar voice. Curry herself has already started a new YouTube series using the follower mod, which you can catch the start of here. You can recruit Shirley in game by heading to her house and completing a quest to retrieve a couple of her weapons for her. After you’ve gotten back Shirley’s greatsword, she can join you as your own warrior companion....

Rather than breakdown every livestream for this week’s Headlines & Hot Takes, we’ve decided to pluck out the things we liked the look of, and have a nice chat about them. The Elden Ring trailer has made a believer out of Matthew, which is something no one was expecting. And even if it went on a little long during Square’s chaos-filled showcase, I quite liked the look of Guardians of the Galaxy....

Headlines & Hot Takes revolves around one topic: Epic Games vs Apple. The amount of information coming out of that courtroom has been wild. Epic have shelled out close to $12 million on those free games you’ve been downloading every time you remember to login, and the figure they’ve spent on Epic Games Store exclusives is staggering. We also now know that Fortnite has made them lots and lots of money....

The former Wii U exclusive got a patch yesterday, introducing the Wonder-Size Cadet demo. It lets you play through the prologue and all of Operation 001, and the devs say it’s “a total of about two hours of gameplay.” The demo gives you a bunch of free in-game currency and support items, too, and you can transfer your progress to the full game as well. Better yet, the demo lets you play as the titular character from Platinum’s hack ’n slash series, Bayonetta....

Well, there are almost certainly (let’s face, definitely) examples of this in my career, but thank goodness Deadly Shadows isn’t one of them. My goodness this is a magnificent game. And it’s so, so much more than just The Cradle. In fact, I’d say there are missions in there better than its infamous horror story. Or perhaps what I want from a sneaker has changed in the last sixteen years?...

Unsolved mysteries aside, the HyperX Cloud II is a fantastic headset, all shiny red aluminium and smooth matt black. It’s not just a pretty face, with 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound and noise cancelling, all you need for a pleasant gaming and/or chat experience. Katharine found it comfortable with superb sound and a good mic, stating that purchases would be “very pleased indeed.” The one grumble was the cost, but if you can forgo the freedom of wirelessness, the current £59 asking price of the wired incarnation is considerably more wallet-friendly than the £150 version we looked at....

Before you do anything else, just check out the glossy, beautified trailer version here. It really is gorgeous. I’ll show you what it looks like on my machine in a moment. Neither comparing Minecraft to Legos nor making texture packs inspired by them is new, of course. This sure is a really impressive take on it though. I’ve seen other packs simulate the brick-y look simply with 2D textures. Others have taken advantage of 3D textures using shaderpacks....

Other players didn’t quite get as far as following the poor thing, though. Believing that it could be a special enemy that might drop some good loot, this player just straight up killed it, only to receive a mere slab of Radstag meat in return. The Observant Radstags don’t always seem to work as intended, however. One Reddit user said it led them to a log, but there wasn’t actually anything in it....

Except, it’s not unrelated at all. It’s the game that Ostriv developer Yevheniy made while suffering through the invasion of Ukraine, “to switch my mind from death and destruction towards peace and creativity”. I’d be recommending it for sure even if I hadn’t found that out, because it’s a terrific little game that’s far more engaging than it looks.

The Turbo Golf Racing beta will run from Thursday, April 28th at 2am PDT/10am BST/11am CEST until Monday, May 2nd at 4am PDT/12pm BST/1pm CEST. Players who want to join can request access via Steam now, and it sounds like it will be available to everyone who signs up. The beta will contain 12 playable courses, online multiplayer for up to eight players, a singleplayer time trial mode, and a bunch of daily missions and player levels to advance through....

Two Point Campus is another silly sim about building an institution and trying to keep it running and profitable despite foolishness. This time, it’s a university, with silly rooms and courses. It looks familiar foundations with newness on top and yup, I’m interested. Two Point Campus is coming May 17th to PC, Xboxes, PlayStations, and Nintendo Switch. It’ll cost £35/€40/$40 on Steam or be covered by a Game Pass subscription....

That’s Australian artist Bosslogic there, drawing for what Ubisoft call “the next Assassin’s Creed setting reveal.” Presumably they’ll have a bit more to say about it once the drawing’s done, though I wouldn’t expect anything too much. With E3 cancelled this year, I suppose this is one silly and fun way to start revving up your marketing engine. No point in saving everything for big on-stage announcements with cars descending from the ceiling and troupes of dancers....

Much like our previous episode on Overwatch 2, Hayden and I delve into the nitty gritty of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign. Hayden thinks it’s terrible, I don’t think it’s actually that bad, and we debate this fact for around an hour. To be honest, Hayden’s critical thinking starts to sway me to the darkside as we touch on what actually makes COD campaigns decent and how MW2’s compares to the rest....

So, count me excited when Liam and I had the chance to sample Valheim’s next major update Mistlands, which brings with it a smoky new biome, magic, new building bits, and blimps that are actually giant ticks that soar in the sky and spit acidic warheads at you. It was great to be back. Liam and I were lucky enough to spend an hour with Iron Gate’s lead artist Robin Eyre and senior developer Jonathan Smårs on a whistlestop tour of Mistlands....

Snowball Fight is a quick 5v5 team deathmatch, where the first team to 50 kills wins. Your only weapon is Brimstone’s molotov launcher, except it’s filled with unlimited snowballs (rather than fire, obvs). It’s high-stakes too, because it only takes one direct-hit to get killed by a deadly snowball. It’s a silly mode that often leads to multiple stand-offs as you and your enemies constantly try (and fail) to lead your shots well enough to kill each other....

Last year, Valve already made it harder to change your store country on Steam by requiring users to make a purchase from the country they claimed they were in with a payment method from said country. This made things difficult for people who use VPNs (virtual private networks that let you pretend you’re browsing the internet in another country), because they could no longer say, “Hey Steam! I’m in France!...
