Here’s a trailer: The Sunset Station Update, aka v1.1.0, is free and out now and adds an infinite dungeon called “the Limitless Line.” It takes place aboard a train with carriages players can endlessly fight through, including new enemies, elite enemies, and a new boss. Players will gain items called Trinkets on the train, which “define a meta of their own,” according to the Steam post about the update....

As a game it could be fun, mind. Ubisoft’s Hyper Scape isn’t great but shows a battle royale with high mobility in a city can be a right lark, bounding over buildings and zipping through streets....

On my last life, I killed around 24,000 monsters in 30 minutes. I am hooked. It starts small. I like to play as an unlockable character with a wand, and as I walk around the grass-textured level they’ll fire off a blast towards a nearby enemy every few seconds. Pew. Pew. Pew. Defeated enemies drop gems, which are XP. I collect them and quickly level up. Levelling up lets me select an upgrade: a new attack, or a stronger version of an existing attack, or some more health....

With that disclosed, I do like the look of Hundred Days, a genteel vineyard management game that just launched on Steam. There’s a lot of detailed work that goes into making wrong Ribena. The process of the awful cordial is involved and lovingly recreated. You plot your vineyard out then get graping. Grapes are fickle beasts, but the game tells you all about your soil pH, what sort of exposure they’re getting, the health of the plant… It goes on....

Having played the demo last night with a couple of friends, I can confirm that I like this reverse direction the devs have taken. I had an okay time. And I was totally okay with that. Not everything needs to be brilliant nowadays, sheesh. The moment you lay hands on Outriders it feels like you’ve travelled back in time to the early noughties. It is 2021, but on your monitor it is 2006, as your character ducks into cover like Marcus Fenix, right before they crack open a juicy loot chest....

Isn’t this just adorable? I’m more excited about this than I am the flash cyberpunk world of Stray. That’s mostly down to my love of grappling hooks, and spiders being nature’s grapplers. It seems like you’ll be using your web to swing, to gain momentum, to drag objects, and to string webs together to make ad hoc platforms. Ya know, spider stuff. I like also that you’ll be doing some of these things while riding on a skateboard and wearing a top hat, and using your powers to fix giant antbots....

Alice Bee Honestly I’m not sure what I’ll get up to this weekend. I was recommended a Dreamcast survival horror game called D2 (I was never a Dreamcast kid so I won’t have played most Dreamcast games you recommend), so I might spend a couple of days trying to get an emulator working. Alice0 My mum is visiting for the first time in years, so I’m playing an intense session real-life Viscera Cleanup Detail....

Thankfully there are lots of games which do it wonderfully - so, which game does it best? “Melee” covers a pretty broad range of ways of hitting things. I’m thinking about the gleeful high kicks of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, and the just as gleeful low kicks of FEAR. I’m thinking about spinning lightsabers in Jedi Knight 2, and the mannered fencing combos of Blade Symphony or more recently Hellish Quart....

Ridiculous spell animations One of my favourite moments in RPGs is getting into a back-alley brawl with misguided muggers who don’t realise I have endgame magic. While they brandish bronze daggers, my mage blasts a laser into outer space, shattering an asteroid and drawing the fragments down to rain meteors upon the poor bandits. Overkill, sure, but I cannot resist ridiculous spell animations. Not having consoles, I came to JRPGs (the true home of daft animations) late....

Romance Romance can be many things in games: a noun, a verb, a genre, or what went down in those Three Kingdoms. Even as someone who broadly dismisses most video game romances (n) as terrible, oh I cannot resist the opportunity to romance (v). And if a game offers a choice of romantic partners, I will hold strong feelings on which options are correct and which exist only to root out bad people....

So I’m here to ask: what’s your comfort gaming for when you’re sick? For me, I’m looking for the sweet spot between “easy sense of accomplishment” and “engrossing enough that I briefly forget my sinus pain.” A game with which I can interact without a lot of focus, but which has enough going on that I can binge on it. That rules out most action games, from deadly platformers to first-person shooters....
