Update 1.0.5 launched today. It adds restrictions around coins to make gold selling more of a nuisance, stopping new characters from trading for a while and cutting of easy cash farms by shuffling some rewards from early in the main quest storyline to later. They say they’ve banned and suspended many accounts reported for spamming chat. As for duping, yup, they say they’ve fixed bugs that let players duplicate items and gold....
With the most recent update, Origins, No Man’s Sky is so damned close to being the game I’ve always wished it could be. And perhaps far more importantly, it feels so damned close to being a bunch of other games all manner of other people wish it could be. As I play my way, casually sauntering between galaxies, mining for valuables, occasionally fulfilling mission goals in my own time, meticulously scanning every tiny rock on every planet I explore, I’m aware how differently I could be approaching this....

I’ve yet to have a go on the public version of GeForce Now, but I was impressed when I tried it out all the way back in January 2018, and the fact you don’t have to buy individual games to play on the service like you do with Google Stadia remains one of its strongest points. Games still have to be approved and added to the service by Nvidia, but as long as you own the game in question already, there’s no extra charge to play it on GeForce Now....

Discovering and solving its secrets is a joy, and sometimes a terror....
Your easily entranced monkey brain is the cornerstone of this dopamine-dispensing closed loop. Outriders is a science-fiction adventure in which you start out barely armed and dressed in damp brown rags, deploying what few abilities you have to salvage glittering rewards and incrementally improve your character’s murdering potential. The essential casino elements are all here: freshly dropped weapons and armour sparkle in different colours to indicate their rarity, training you to process the screen not with your caring human eyes, but those of a greedy magpie in search of shiny bottle caps....

Atlus’ Persona 4 Golden arrived on PC via Steam in 2020 and had sold more than one million copies after a year on the storefront. Katharine felt that its port was far from perfect, with PS2-era hangovers like unskippable cutscenes and static save points, but thought the game looked pretty in 4K. Hopefully, Atlus and publishers SEGA will have put some effort in for Persona 5 Royal and P3P. Ed begged for Persona 5 on PC last year, clearly suffering from the well-documented condition of JRPG withdrawal....

Nvidia have been trying to get their Big Format Gaming Displays (or BFGD) off the ground for absolutely ages, but so far we’ve had precisely one come out - the insanely expensive $5000 HP Omen X Emperium. Philips’ 558M1RY, on the other hand, is due to come out at the end of this month for 1299€, which works out to around £1175 / $1459 if you do a straight conversion (official UK and US pricing have yet to be confirmed), and is roughly the same price as a decent 4K TV....

Worthy games, but I’m going to make a belated pitch for a left field contender: Planetary Annihilation: Titans, a real-time strategy game that hoped to follow in Supreme Commander’s big robot footsteps, and which has been quietly humming away under new developers for the past couple of years. It’s easy to toil away on something enormously popular, which - with the exception of Among Us - all of the other games mentioned above always have been....
Thankfully, that seems to have been fixed with an update yesterday. With new funding, the game’s server capacity and support has been upgraded. The current player count on Steam is about 61,000, and I experienced no queue when I just tried to get in. I’ve been enjoying watching this all play out via the developer’s Twitter feed. First they explained that they only had slots for 65,536 concurrent players that no amount of optimisation would correct that....
