Not that I struggle with letting go of characters and stories particularly, but my brain makes an exception for the Yakuza games. More specifically, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s games. I’ve reached a point where I’m ordering Lost Judgment with no intention of playing it for months - maybe even a year? It’s all a ploy to hang onto RGG’s characters and worlds for as long as I can; a sort of buffer to keep the unease at bay....
These are very good robots. Not the pristine, precision-engineered war machines of modern science-fiction, with all of their ball bearings and cupholders and heated seats, but noisy, oily, juddering wrecks that stink of WD40 and tremble like nervous metal greyhounds. These are janky, diesel-powered mechs that look like they’re about to rattle themselves to pieces sooner than stroll into battle. Iron Harvest conveys the look and feel of Rozalski’s fantasy universe, tapping into the sense of awe and privilege real Europeans must have felt when they witnessed the first ever tank trundling into their town to obliterate the post office....
Wild Hearts is set in a fantasy-tinged version of feudal Japan. Your samurai-ish character can team up with two others for three-player co-op. They’ll need to use a crafting technology called Karakuri to thwack monsters that resemble colossal versions of regular animals, such as warthogs, birds, and wolves. These cheeky overgrown scamps have been infused with the power of nature to become beasts known as Kemono, and you don’t want to mess with that unless you’ve got some handy ancient tech up your sleeve....
Lair Of The Clockwork God is a game about getting older: the bewilderment and comedy of being left behind, of becoming less certain and more rigid. It’s the ageing anthem of designer-writers Ben Ward and Dan Marshall, perhaps the first people to star in their own game since Vin Diesel. More precisely, Clockwork God stars polarised caricatures of its lead developers, each with their own way of wrestling mortality. Ben still lives by the self-set rules of ‘90s point-and-click adventures - perambulating levels with one eyebrow raised, and refusing to climb over even the smallest of ledges....
That said, I do think 2021 will prove to be a pivotal year for RPS - and not just because I stole Graham’s key card and changed the locks on the front door of the Treehouse. After careful analysis, I have concluded that Dicey is a good lad. This is because he strongly resembles the Pot Boys from Elden Ring. In fact, I’d say he’s likely a relative. Mojang’s build ’em up has been included with the console version of Game Pass since 2019 but was curiously absent from PC subs. I am very glad to see both the Java and Bedrock editions covered. Java is the original version, the version with all the big mods, the one your PC pals may be more likely to own. But Bedrock is the cross-platform version, the one which lets you play with folks on consoles and phones, and which has official RTX support if you want that weird shiny raytracing....

Naturally, because this is Minecraft, players have changed what they don’t like. There are now mods which strip messages of information tieing them to your player profile. There are a handful of mods that seem to do it successfully. No Chat Reports by Aizistral apparently “strips cryptographic signatures” which associate the messages you send with your Minecraft account, and it supports the Forge and Fabric modding APIs. NoEnryption by Doclic does the same thing for Minecraft Spigot server software, and No Chat Reports by TechnicallyCoded, also for Spigot, says it’s “currently the only plugin which is able to fully replicate the vanilla behaviour” and supports multiple languages....

That’s about all they have to say for now, promising more info on the expansion “soon”. For now, its website is this-a-way. Monster Hunter Rise debuted on Nintendo Switch in March. It has some feudal Japanese vibes, both in the look of the world and Yokai inspirations for some monsters....
During their digital Monster Hunter event today, Capcom showed off some of the particulars of gene inheritance for your monstie pals. MonStories 2 revolves around turn-based battles between your monsties, so the gene splicing bit is a method of improving their combat ability by bumping up their attributes or gifting them new combat skills. You can spot a look at the Rite Of Channeling here in today’s showcase. They also chat a bit about finding eggs for special monsties with rare genes by diving into monster dens....

Moonbreaker’s in-game shop and Pulsars - the game’s purchasable currency - have been completely removed and players will be refunded for any Pulsar purchases automatically. The game’s free currency, Blanks and Merits, are being replaced and converted into Sparks, which is a new currency allowing players to increase a Unit’s rarity. The team also confirmed that the rarity system will “remain completely cosmetic in nature.” Booster Boxes are being converted into Sparks, too....
